Musty odor in front-load washers is caused by bio-film buildup inside the lower fold of the rubber door gasket and stagnant water trapped in the lower drain pump filter. Cleaning both areas with a mild bleach or vinegar solution takes under 15 minutes and permanently eliminates sour odors.
What you will need
- Microfiber cloths or soft towels
- Shallow baking pan or bowl (to catch drain water)
- Old toothbrush
- Warm water mixed with mild liquid dish soap or a 3:1 water-and-white-vinegar solution (or diluted bleach if black mildew is present)
Step 1: Clean the rubber door gasket (The Bellows)
The rubber seal around the drum door has deep folds designed to prevent water leakage. Over time, hair, coins, pet fur, and excess detergent settle into the bottom fold.
- Gently peel back the rubber lip with your fingers to inspect the interior groove.
- Remove any physical debris (hairpins, coins, lint clumps).
- Spray your cleaning solution inside the fold and scrub with a microfiber cloth or soft toothbrush.
- Wipe completely dry with a fresh towel. Never leave pooling moisture inside the fold.
Step 2: Clear the lower drain pump filter
Most modern front-loaders (LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Bosch, GE) have a small access door at the bottom front. This compartment houses a drain tube and a pump filter that traps foreign objects.
- Place a towel and shallow pan directly beneath the access door.
- Open the access panel and pull out the small black rubber drain hose.
- Remove the hose plug and let all trapped stagnant water (typically 1 to 2 cups) drain into your pan. Replace the plug securely.
- Turn the main round filter knob counter-clockwise to unscrew and remove it.
- Rinse the filter mesh under warm running tap water and remove all trapped lint and gunk.
- Inspect the pump housing with a flashlight, screw the filter back in firmly until tight, and close the access door.
Step 3: Wash the detergent drawer
Liquid fabric softener and high-efficiency (HE) detergents leave a waxy film behind. Press the release tab (usually marked with PUSH) to slide the entire drawer out. Scrub under warm water with a toothbrush to clear all siphon channels, then slide it back in.
Step 4: Run a hot Tub Clean cycle
Once the physical components are clean, run a dedicated Tub Clean or hottest Sanitize cycle with an oxygen-based washer cleaner tablet (such as Affresh) or 1 cup of liquid bleach. Do not add laundry.
3 Golden rules to keep odor away permanently
- Leave the door ajar: Keep the washer door cracked 2 to 3 inches after every wash to allow moisture to evaporate naturally.
- Use less detergent: Excess HE detergent cannot rinse clean in high-efficiency washers and feeds mildew growth. Use 2 tablespoons maximum per normal load.
- Wipe the gasket weekly: Run a dry cloth over the bottom rubber fold after your last load of the day.
